Unit 48: Brief 4- Mixing and mastering

The process of mixing and mastering

Mixing

(All tracks, grouped and coloured)

grouping
first you need to group your tracks together (for example all the vocal tracks together) then you select a colour that is going to represent this group (for example I have used red for the vocals)

this track saves a lot of time and makes it easier to find exactly what you are looking for.

(all tracks cut)

Cutting
Decided what part of the track needs to be cut off, select the scissors image along the top box, use this to snip at the track
TIP: only cut it out if it is longer than a bar
WARNING: be careful not to cut out the end of an instrument

(groups:vocal send/guitar/drum/brass)

Grouping
Grouping is effectively an effects shall
To be able to do this you make a new track
Then you need to name it (aka vocals) and then set a colour to represent that section.
Lastly you need to Decided what we wanted in them (the colour sections go into different ones)

(FX channel settings EQ done)

EQ
EQ stands for equalizer this is used to balance a track by boosting or lowering the frequencies that are in a track.
in order to edit the EQ you select the track you want to effect and then go tp the left hand side and press the 'e' button. this will open up a separate screen the shows the equalizer, here you can change the frequencies.

(balancer screen)

balancing
balancing controls how much sound come from either speaker, this will effect the overall effect of the track and how close to professional standards it will be. to open up the mixer you go to the tool bar at the top of the screen and select devises and go down to Mixer. this will open up a separate winnow which is where you can balance the track.

( FX channel screen + inserts)

(compressor)

I decided to compress the instrumental groups rather than each one indervbidualy as this would be easier.

Reverb
reverb is an insert just like a compressor, however insert of selecting dynamics , you would have to go to "RoomWorks", this will open up the reverb window where you can adjust the dials for pre-delay, Reverb time, Size, Diffusion and width.

Automation
this is the exact opposite of what the compressor does, this can be used to higher the volume of the track you are editing.to get to this effect you would do exactly the same process as you would for the compressor however you would select expander instead .

Fading
the fading effect is used at the end of tracks, this helps the overall project to have a soft ending.

Gate
a gate is very similar to a filter. it is used to illuminate background noise from a track. this is possible because any background noises would be a low level frequency and the instrument would be a high level frequency.
to access the gate option you need to go onto EQ, select 'add insert', gate can be found under the option for dynamics, this will allow you to change the threshold

Mastering

Formatting
For both tracks the format will be a CD quality, the reason for this is that it is the format most commonly used for high quality audio.
to mix down a track you have to go to your toolbar at the top of the screen, and then yo choose 'export' and then 'audio mix down'. here a new window will pop up, this is where you can change then format to 'CD quality'. You then add the file to a new Cubase project so you can master it.

Multiband Compressor
This insert can be used to balance the track even further than before. in order to open up this option you need to go to the effecr window, click inserts which is located on the left, then go to dynamics and choose 'multiband compressor'.
The four different compressor graph you will see represent different frequencies.

EQ
This EQ is exactly the same as before , the only difference is how you access the window.
to do this you select mixer on the toolbar, click on the 'e' on the stereo output side, then you can edit the EQ to your likening.

Level of mix
this allows you to edit the over all volume of the track to ensure that it is of a high quality.
to open this option you once again go to the mixer window .
